Ask Mike Your Fitness Question:
923. Q: dear mike, acne really sucks what foods can i eat to help?

A: If you have a severe acne problem, you should talk to your doctor and you also should remember than some acne is almost unavoidable during teenage years. But there're certainly foods you can eat or avoid to minimize acne. Good news is that most of the foods you eat to be healthy overall will help fight acne too.

Avoid: all dairy, wheat products (including bread and pasta), white rice, sweets and candy, junk food of all sorts, commercial salad dressings, processed foods (which is almost anything that comes in a box or a can) and preservatives, salt, whey protein, and beef and pork (eat chicken and fish instead).

Eat more of: whole vegetables (especially green ones), whole fruits, non-wheat breads, brown rice, beans, lentils, chicken, fish, extra virgin olive oil, dry-roasted nuts. If you can, get more organic foods. If not, that's still OK as long as you eat the good stuff. Hope that helps!

924. Q: Is it possible to get a good cardio workout, and lose fat, by walking in place or maby jogging in place ,at a steady pace, for 1 to 2 hours everyday? Also, if I get very winded, do I slow down my pace until I catch my breath? and while I am going at that slower pace to catch my breath, am I still burning fat? ? Thanks

A: Definitely, walking or jogging or dancing or jump-roping in place are all perfectly good cardio workouts and they can help you lose some fat. Either keeping steady slow pace throughout or speeding up and then slowing down to catch your breath are OK. But instead of doing 1-2 hours of cardio every day, I would strongly recommend improving your diet and taking up at least some weight training. Please read my weight loss article for the reasons and the details.
925. Q: iam thin and i have the classical last bit of fat on my belly(very typical).I have low body fat percentage(about 8,7i think). Can i get a six pack or do i need to lose the last bit of fat first?Cause i ve heard that i may have abs but the fat will cover them....If so,how i ll lose this last fat?

A: If your body fat is really 8.7% then you should be able to see your six-pack already. If you just have a very flat stomach with virtually no fat (you almost can't grab any fat at all with your fingers), then you should be very close to having a six-pack and it's just a matter of working your abs to build up the muscle more so they protrude through the skin.

However it is also very possible that your body fat measure was off by a couple of percetage points (which is very common and really unavoidable) and you're actually in 11-12% body fat. In this case you'd need to lose some more fat first.

I can't tell you for sure over the internet, of course, but if you really cannot see any outline of your six-pack at all when you flex (not even if it's extremely faint), then I would suspect the second conclusion -- that you're actually above 10% body fat and still need to lose a little bit more fat to get to the six-pack stage.

926. Q: how to lose inches around waist

A: The keys are a good fat-burning diet and heavy whole-body weightlifting. Both these things will boost your metabolism, increase your fat-burning and preserve your existing muscle, which is your greatest fat-burner. Please read my weight loss article.
927. Q: what is overworking exercise

A: Sorry, I am not sure what you mean. If you asking what is 'overtraining', then the answer is that overtraining happens when your body is not given enough time and/or nutrition and/or rest to fully recover in between workouts. Over time overtraining will lead to lack of progress and injuries. Some of its other symptoms are insomnia, irritability, lack of hunger, small nagging pains and injuries that don't go away.
928. Q: Type your question here and click Submit.HOW MANY CALORIES DOES AN AN IDIVIDUAL BURN IN A NORMAL CARDIAC WORKOUT

A: It will depend on exercise type, intensity, and how big you are. For an average person running or walking a mile will burn around 120 calories. Two miles, correspondingly burn twice the calories, and so on. In general 10 calories per minute is a good rough approximation for many forms of physical activity.

But remember that counting 'calories burned' is not in general a good way to lose the fat and keep it off. While 'burning' 400 calories per day may all come from fat, 'burning' 1000 calories per day may well result in significant muscle loss as well which will eventually lead to lack of fat loss and possibly fat gain. It's not just about calories eaten versus calories burned! Please read my weight loss article to learn the best way to lose extra fat and keep it off afterwards.

929. Q: how can I lose my man boobs

A: The keys are a good fat-burning diet and heavy whole-body weightlifting. Both these things will boost your metabolism, increase your fat-burning and preserve your existing muscle, which is your greatest fat-burner. Please read my weight loss article.
930. Q: what mucsle are worked out when doing tricept extensions?

A: Triceps extensions exercise your triceps :) Triceps are the muscles in the back of your upper arms, oppsosite of biceps. Biceps are the muscles that most people associate with arms -- they create a small 'bump' on the arm when flexed. While biceps are responsible for bending at the elbow, triceps are responsible for the opposite action -- extending the arm at the elbow.
932. Q: hell mike i was wanting to know if i continuesly workout and not change my diet HARSHLY if i can still lose fat and build muscle( most of my diet consists of protien)

A: Yes, you'll definitely make some progress by taking up exercise even if your diet stays the same. A good diet will make that progress faster and allow it to proceed for much longer. But if your goals are modest you may well be able to achieve them without ever bothering to improve your diet. If you post your current diet, I'll be able to give you a better idea of how much progress you can expect.
933. Q: Mike, How can i BOOST my metabolism ?

A: Best way to boost metabolism is just like the best way to lose fat -- a good diet and heavy whole-body weight training. This makes sense of course, since high metabolism is THE key to burning fat. See how to have a good diet and how to exercise.
934. Q: how much weight can i lose in 1 month, and is trying to lose about 3-4 pounds a week bad

A: Optimally I recommend losing weight at 1 pound per week if you want fat-loss to continue for a long time AND not have the fat come back later (which is the most common reason why millions of different fad diets fail). 2 pounds per week should be the upper limit unless you are very very overweight. So with that in mind, 3-4 pounds per week is too much and in 1 month I'd aim for 4-8 pounds. Please see Q&A #791 for more about this.
935. Q: WHAT KIND OF EXERCISES ARE GOOD TO FLAT YOUR STOMACH AND YOUR SIDES

A: It's not just about exercises. If you have a poor diet, then all the exercises in the world won't help. The key to getting flat stomach and sides is to lose extra fat -- please see how to lose weight.
938. Q: Is eatting right and doing aprox 200 situps per day going to get my stomach ripped looking

A: Probably no. Eating right is 50% of the equation, but the other 50% is heavy exercise for ALL your muscles, not just the abdominals. Exercising ALL your muscles will maximize fat burning which is what you're really looking for when trying to get ripped abs. If you only do crunches, then you'll only get 10% of the fat burning you could've had! Please see how to lose fat.
