Ask Mike Your Fitness Question:
494. Q: I have some questions.Ok,first.I do weight training 3 times a week so i ll be able to train every week my whole body.I do weight training on Monday first day of the week but the other 2 days i have to do together(one following by another without having a resting day between them)cause other day i dont have free time to do so.But in these 2 days i train different parts of my body.Is it ok?I mean this way do i allow my muscles to recover from the previous day since i train different team of muscles each time? Also, when 2 days pass from the day i did weight training do i need to take protein then?(as fas as i know the recovery period of muscles is one day after u trained them. And last,if u dont go to gym or exercise in general do u need protein? Thanks.

A: To your first question, yes, you can have two workouts back-to-back in which you hit different body parts. Try to distance the back-to-back days from Monday -- so Thursday & Friday is probably the best days for that. If that doesn't fit your schedule, then just do best you can.

For your second question, there's no reason why your diet should change significantly in the protein intake day-to-day. I recommend keeping your diet the same throughout and that you try to get at least one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight daily, preferably more. Fill out the Fitness Guide to see my recommendation for a complete daily diet program.

495. Q: Why the only way to lose the last belly fat is weight training? Why u cant lose it by cardio like the rest of the fat?I mean how this is explained.

A: Weight training (combined with the right diet) is pretty much always the superior fat loss approach compared to cardio. Getting the last bit of belly fat is just an example of that. Check out the discussion in Q&A #125 and other answers referenced in there.
496. Q: i have seem some guys who always eat junk food for the most part(almost daily)but they are always thin.If i do it i gain fat very fast. How do they manage to do it?They dont eat a lot but they eat from outside in a daily base, yet always stay thin. This is so fustrating, isnt it?

A: Half of it is that they don't eat a lot, like you said. If you eat a little, even if it's junk, you're not going to gain much, if any, fat. The second half of it is that not everyone's genetics are the same -- some people gain weight and fat easier than others.

In either case, their 'luck' will only take them so far. Young guys who are skinny and lean and who eat like you described are guaranteed to start growing pot bellies by their mid-to-late 20s and beyond unless they start exercising and eating right. And the older they get the worse it'll get. So by exercising and eating well you're building a huge advantage over them that'll only increase as you get older.

497. Q: What areas do the treadmill target on your body?

A: Treadmill is primarily a cardio exercise. That means it carries benefits for your heart and can also assist you in losing fat from all over your body (the big asterisk here is that you should not rely on cardio alone to lose fat. See this for an explanation of complete fat-loss program). Treadmill will not build up any of your muscles to any significant degree with the possible exception of calves. Your upper legs may gain a little bit of mass if you've never done cardio or weight training before, but it won't be much.
