Ask Mike Your Fitness Question:
1230. Q: how do i lose weight but also gain muslce because i was told that if i do cardio and weight traing that one is cancelling the other out

A: If you are a beginner, slow weight loss through a healthy balanced diet combined with weight training and little or no cardio will also allow you to build muscle. You can get a complete sample program by filling out the Fitness Guide specifying weight loss or tone as your goal.

However as you progress in your training you will not be able to continue losing weight/fat and gaining muscle at the same time, so you will be well advised to concentrate on one or the other at that point.

1231. Q: I'm looking at getting NESTA certified to work part time as a trainer in GA. It seems to be a legitimate certification, and it would allow me to study at my own pace. What are your thoughts on NESTA certification?

A: Unfortunately I am not familiar with NESTA certification, so I really cannot comment on it specifically. I'd say the most widely recognized certifications are the National Strength and Conditioning Association's Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT) and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) as well as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Bug again, that is not to put down NESTA or any other program -- I'm simply not familiar with them. If you are planning to start out part-timing in a gym, ask local gyms what certifications they recognize and/or prefer and make the decision based on that. Good luck!
1232. Q: Person from Q 1228- I'm 15, 225 lbs, male, not too good physical condition, some physical activity (swimming every day of the week Mon- Friday 20 mins a day at school) large dinner, poor eating(nothing to lie about) I hope you can answer my questikon better now :) Thanx

A: That definitely sounds like a diet problem (which I think even you realize), but again I need more detail about exactly what your breakfast, lunch, and large dinner are in as much detail as possible. Take a look at the first section of my Nutrition article to learn what foods to eat and what to avoid (don't worry about the rest of it so much about how much to eat -- just focus on learning what foods are good for you and what bad for you). Again, if you give me a detailed breakdown of your meals then I'll be able to give more detailed advice.
