Ask Mike Your Fitness Question:
410. Q: I AM A TEENAGER AND WANT TO LOSE MY GUT

A: Need more info than that (age, height, weight), but in general your number one priority should be to clean up your diet and start eating healthy foods and your number two priority is to get more exercise which may include weightlifting.

If you're under 18 you probably should not try to actively diet to lose weight unless you're significantly overweight. Over 18 you can start thinking of dieting more aggressively. But in either case, learn about healthy eating and actually follow it. Read my Nutrition article and Fitness Tips.

If you start lifting weights, you should above all make sure to learn good form for every exercise and follow it perfectly. This will prevent injuries which can not only set you back and but stunt your growth! If you're under 16, you definitely should NOT go to failure on any exercise. After 16 you can start pushing yourself a little harder. Read my Weighttraining article to learn more about proper weightlifting and see some sample programs.

If you clean up your diet and add more exercise your gut will go away as grow into late teens. Good luck!

411. Q: I have manboobs and I've done bench presses for at least 10 min. a day and I seem to only lose the fat that's around my manboobs. What can I do about this?

A: Doing bench presses will build up your chest which will hide the fat on it a little better and it will provide some overall fat-burning benefit (which is how you'll actually lose the man boobs), but chest presses alone work maybe 20% of your muscles. For maximum fat-burning benefits you need to work 100% of your muscles so they can burn fat around the clock as I explain here. Read that article and then follow the Fitness Guide to see what to eat and how to work out for maximum fat (and manboob) loss. Good luck!
412. Q: Mike, its not that i have man boobs.. its just that my nipples are kinda puffy. im 15, but is this like a genetics problem that my body will fix over time or is it something i can help with exercise and diet?

A: It sounds like you have a little fat in the nipple area, which is pretty common. Some of it will go away as your body matures but you can help it along by starting an exercise program and cleaning up your diet to eat more good foods and less junk (read this to learn what's good and what's bad). Don't try to lose weight at 15, just clean up your diet, exercise, and grow :)
