Ask Mike Your Fitness Question:
842. Q: how do i get rid of my chest fat

A: Please read my fat-loss article.
843. Q: calories burnt during sit ups

A: Please see Q&A #632.
844. Q: Hi Mike, First of all great web site its really helpful,But i need to lose about 30 pounds in 30 days. Is this possible or am i chasing something that cant be caught? i was hoping by getting a list of exercises that burn the most fat would Help. Thank you.

A: Why do you need to lose 30 pounds in 30 days? If it's just a goal you set for yourself for whatever reason, then it's not a good goal. Unless you're very very overweight, no matter what you do you won't lose more than 6-8 pounds of fat or so in one month. The rest of your fat loss will be in the form of water and muscle. Water loss isn't true weight loss and it will come back the moment you get off whatever diet you use. Muscle loss is even worse: it will come back in the form of fat and a lot of it making you look much worse than before.

I don't advise to lose weight slowly because I try to hide the true secret of fat weight loss from you! I advise it because it is the ONLY way to lose fat and keep it off afterwards. So for your own good, forget the idea of losing 30 pounds in 30 days. You didn't gain it in 30 days, so don't expect to lose it in 30 days either. Set a realistic goal like lose 30 pounds of fat (not just 30 pounds of 'weight'!) in half a year. Then use my site to put together a diet and exercise program to achieve it. And please do not look for shortcuts or quick fixes if you really want to succeed. Good luck!

845. Q: how can a man lose extra muscle i dont like looking bulky

A: There's a 99% chance that you're making a mistake in assuming that extra muscle is responsible for making you bulky. In virtually all cases I've ever seen the unwanted bulk comes from extra fat, not from extra muscle, even though the person may be convinced otherwise. Unless you've done quite a bit of strength and power sports or weightlifting or heavy physical labor, you do not have a whole lot of muscle. However it is very likely that you do have plenty of of fat and it's that fat that's giving you the bulky appearence. Please read Q&A #780 and be very very sure that you've found the correct reason for your bulkiness.
846. Q: hello Mike, I am 16 5'11 and i weigh 240 but i have a muscular body(not all flab you see) am i to big for my own good? shoud i try to lse an extra 10 or 20 pounds???

A: Medically, you'd certainly be considered overweight, but that does not take body composition (fat vs. muscle) into account. Still, losing 10 or even 20 pounds should not have any negative impact on you if you do it in a healthy way and gradually. Keep in mind that it may affect your sports performance -- for example, if you happen to be a lineman in football, the loss of bulk may make it easier for the other guy to push you around. But aside from considerations like that losing 10-20 pounds should be perfectly fine. Look around my site to find nutrition and training advice for optimum fat loss. Good luck!
847. Q: how can i get a six pack in a week?

A: You can't. Set a realistic goal for yourself and then develop patience and discipline to reach it. For an average young man without much muscle and with a bit of a gut 1 year is a good target for reaching the six-pack. Look around my site for lots of advice and article on how to get there.
848. Q: What can I do besides crunches to lose my gut?

A: Please read my fat-loss article. It's all about having a good diet and a heavy whole-body weight training program.
849. Q: hello mike i have a question about yep you guessed it man boobs. Can they be lost doing chest exercises?

A: Just because you exercise chest doesn't mean you'll burn chest fat, just because you exercise abdominal, doesn't mean you'll burn stomach fat, etc etc. Your body decides where to burn fat and it will in general burn it evenly from all over. So your goal should be to exercise as many muscles as possible, to maximize the fat burn overall and therefore on the chest as well. Chest is maybe 20% of your total muscle mass, so by only exercising chest you'd be missing out on the other 80% of potential fat loss.
850. Q: how many calories are in chinese white rice

A: Please use the Nutrition Facts section of my site for very detailed info including calories, protein, carbs, sugars, fats, vitamins, and minerals for over 5000 foods!
851. Q: how many calories does vegetables have?

A: Please use the Nutrition Facts section of my site for very detailed info including calories, protein, carbs, sugars, fats, vitamins, and minerals for over 5000 foods!
852. Q: should i drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day

A: Yes :) That is a very good idea for anyone and especially somebody trying to improve their physique.
853. Q: how young can you be to start

A: You can and should be physically active at all ages. Weight training specifically you can start early too (as young as 12), BUT you must be responsible around weights, have an adult supervise and spot you, and most importantly use only light or moderate weights and not push yourself too hard till you're at least 16. The reason is that a serious unjury at young age can stunt your growth! So while there's nothing wrong with weight training when young, you should always always always put safety first.
854. Q: hi mike, can you please tell me a pure vegetarian diet chart for gaining muscles, somewhat around 2000 calories, thanx for 829!

A: Check out Q&A #14, Q&A #17, Q&A #21, Q&A #22 -- I helped a vegetarian put together a muscle-building diet in those Q&As. You should be able to adopt that advice to your own needs.
858. Q: what is the difference between a fat-fit body and a muscle-fit body which one is better n why thanx for 829! Rahul Jain

A: Not sure what you mean... It is possible to have quite a bit of fat on you and still be fit and strong. It's also, of course, possible to be fit and strong without much fat. It's really a personal preference. I've also seen some studies that suggest fit people with a lot of fat are generally more healthy than unfit people with a lot of fat, but I'm not really in position to make health-related conclusions. As far as fitness alone, it is possible to be fit and strong and still carry a lot of fat -- it's your personal choice.
859. Q: Hi Mike. I am 5 foot 4.5 (4 and 1/2) inches, 14 years old and I weigh 97 pounds and I think I am obese, could I be? How can I find this out?

A: You are absolutely NOT obese! If anything you're underweight. All you have to do is eat healthy, with plenty of whole fruits and veggies and stay physically active in whichever way you prefer and you'll be in absolutely no danger of ever being obese.
860. Q: can you get rid of man boobs?

861. Q: is there a way of deffinatly getting rid of man boobs

A: Absolutely. Everything you need to know is in my fat-loss article. Read it carefully, including the two articles it references and then follow its directions to Mike's Fitness Guide.
862. Q: Hello mike i was wondering if there is any special way to 'cut' Muscle faster because i want to look good because im only 15 and not many of the girls i hang out with want a guy thats all bulk you know what im saying?

A: Muscle definition depends on muscle size to some degree (larger muscles are more obviously visible, of course), but even more it depends on the amount of body fat. A person without much muscle mass can look very defined if he has low body fat. When it comes to 'cutting' there's pretty much one way of doing it: gradual weight loss, fat-burning diet, and continued weight training to retain as much of the muscle as possible. The basics are described in my fat-loss article.

But trying to lose any significant amount of weight at your age is a bad idea. I understand about looking good and all, but significant weight loss at your age can stunt your growth, especially if you're not significantly overweight now. Instead I suggest you make sure you eat healthy (lots of whole fruits and veggies. Read my Nutrition article) and be active, anything from sports to weight training. Your body's continuing growth will take care of extra flab if you just give it an opportunity by leading a healthy lifestyle.

863. Q: how many calories do you burn doing sit ups?

A: Please see Q&A #197.
864. Q: will calestetics or excercise help burn the extra calories of eating a heavy meal?

A: Calisthenics are a very effective form of exercise, but it's really not a healthy or a productive approach to think in terms of overeating in any one meal and then burning it off. One heavy meal is not going to make any difference and you ought to be exercising regardless. If you have a specific goal (like to lose fat), then you should follow a complete diet and exercise program for optimum results as described here. Otherwise, just enjoy your meals, including big ones, and move on. Being physically active in general is, of course, a good idea no matter what.
866. Q: how long does it take for a meal to digest?I was told 9-12 hours. if this is true, are we overloading ourselves with food, eating 3to 5 meals a day?

A: A meal will typically take a full 24 hours to pass through your system (we have 25 feet of intestines!), but that doesn't mean we should only eat once a day. Stomach starts emptying almost immediately after eating and typically completes within 4-5 hours. Even if the stomach is not fully empty, you can still have you next meal within 3 hours or even sooner and it won't go to waste or cause any sort of blockage. If your meals are relatively big, then you may well feel very full for the first few days on the new diet, but your system will adjust very quickly.
867. Q: what if the rib cage is the cause of your man boobs

A: That doesn't happen. You can have a large rib cage leading to a big chest overall, but your rib cage will never cause 'boobs' to appear since it's even everywhere and doesn't have any bumps. In vast majority of cases 'man boobs' are simply extra fat deposits around the nipple area.
