Ask Mike Your Fitness Question:
422. Q: how many calories do you need to lose to to lose one kilogram

A: One kilogram of fat has around 8000 calories. But remember that just because you underet by 8000 calories doesn't mean that they will come from fat. If you do everything right, eat healthy, exercise including weighttraining, and spread the 8000 calories deficit over a long time (a couple of weeks), then you'll lose about kilo of fat. But if you go on a crash diet and undereat 8000 calories in a matter of several days, you'll lose only a little bit of fat and a whole lot of muscle which will leave you looking and feeling worse than before and make more vulnerable to gaining new fat. ALWAYS LOSE WEIGHT SLOWLY!!!
423. Q: how to lose 15 kgs in 30 days?

A: YOU CAN'T AND YOU SHOULDN'T!!! If you go on a crash diet you can certainly accomplish it by losing maybe 2-3 kg of fat, 4-5 kg of water, and 7-8 kg of muscle. After you do that you will look same or worse than before and you will regain whatever little fat you lost and MUCH MORE in very short order. Lose the mindset that you can quickly and easily slim down. It's not true no matter what all the commercials and ads are telling you. Eat healthy, exercise, weighttrain, and lose 2-3 kilos per month for true sustained fat loss. Do the right thing instead of looking for quick fixes which only backfire. Read this this article carefully and follow its directions. Good luck!
424. Q: I weigh 155 and am a size 6 comfortably. How is that possible?

A: Size 6 is about average for a woman, I believe, and 155 pounds may very well be about average weight for your height, so there's your answer :) Even if 155 is above average for your height, you may be more muscular than average or your fat distribution be different from average so you can fit in size 6 comfortably.
425. Q: what is a good fat burning diet?

A: Please read my Nutrition article to learn what, when, and how much to eat to burn fat successfully.
426. Q: how many colories should i burn if i want to be skinny

A: There's no single answer to that that works for everyone. For the rough idea of what YOU should eat and how YOU should exercise, fill out my Fitness Guide and specify that your goal is to lose fat. It'll tell you what to do to achieve your goal.

429. Q: I have seen about one 'sauna' belt.U are supposed to just wear this belt and lose points from ur belly area just in a matter of 2 weeks. You only wear this andu do it.In work,in a walk, reading a newspaper or doing everything.Theirs invertors claim that it can burn around 600 calories an hour and this cause with the hot it produces it makes u sweat a lot and in that way u lose fat from the area u spot with it.Also they say gym is not enough cause u need to make too much so u can sweat so much.It shows also people who have lost fat from their belly area with it only in 2 weeks. What is your opinion on this? Can sweat burn so much calories? Is this perhaps only water loss?It really sounds too good to be true isnt it?!

A: It's complete garbage. Sweating by itself will never ever make you burn fat, it just makes you lose water and leaves you dehydrated. After you're done sweating you'll (hopefully) drink enough water to replenish the water you lost and will be back at the starting point. This belt along with many other 'fat-burning' contraptions is at best a total waste of money. And it worst it'll dehydrate you enough to actually jeopardize your health.

THERE ARE NO GOOD SHORTCUTS when trying to lose fat. It's very simple to do and just requires knowledge (which I try to provide on this site), patience, and discipline. If you got those three things, you can pretty much count on being able to lose up to 50 pounds of FAT (not just 'weight') per year AND keep them off afterwards. Do the right thing and you'll be thanking yourself the rest of your life.

430. Q: what do i do to lose 10 kg in 7 months? and is it possible to lose weight when ure thin?

A: Losing 10 kilos in 7 months is very doable and is a healthy fat-loss goal. Please read this article to learn the basic of fat loss and then fill out the Fitness Guide to get your exercise and diet prescription to lose fat.

As for your second question, it is always possible to lose weight up until the point of death from starvation -- the question is why do you want to do it? What you really should be asking is if it's possible to lose FAT (not just weight) when you're already thin and the answer is that it's possible but far from easy. If you're thin and have little fat on you your body will try its darnest to hang on to what little fat you have. This is very different from trying to lose fat when you're overweight -- in that case your body is quite happy to part with its extra fat (unless you're starving it). But if you're already thin, then your diet and exercise regimen have to be very good to continue losing fat.

431. Q: Hello again, I recently asked you about the effects of curling 10 kilos many times. I had another PAIR of important questions. I don't have access to a gym and may not have one for a while. Without a gym, what excercises can help me develop strength. I also heard that squats are bad for the knees. I have shoe inserts: are squats really bad for the knees... respectively, that is, are they bad for me? Thanks again.

A: First off, squats are not bad for the knees UNLESS you have an existing medical condition or perform squats with bad form. In your case you do have an existing condition -- flat feet -- which makes your knees vulnerable when squatting. Only a doctor or a physical therapist can tell you for sure whether squats are appropriate for you, but at the very least you would need shoes/inserts with a very strong arch support specifically designed for sports/weightlifting.

As to the strength-building exercises without gym, check out my No-equipment program -- it contains several exercises which you can do at home (just need a chinup bar) and that work all the major muscle groups in your body. Just remember to ask your doctor or therapist about squats and lunges first. In the long-term you will probably want to either get a gym membership or at least get heavier dumbbells so you can do these other exercises with higher weights -- else you'll be once again working on mucular endurance more than strength.

432. Q: I've always had underdeveloped calves, but even with running and biking I don't have much definition. Body fat is 16%. It seems almost all runners and bikers have good definition. What can I do to catch up?

A: Definition in calves or anywhere else will come from having low body fat. At 16% body fat you're about average, so if you want greater definition you'll probably want to bring the body fat down to 10-12% range.

Because you're not overweight now, I recommend that you incorporate heavy whole-body weight training into your exercise routine if you decide to try to lose some fat. That will ensure that you do not lose too much muscle mass along with the fat. Fill out the Fitness Guide to get a sample exercise and diet prescription. Because you probably do much more cardio than an average person, you will want to increase the portion sizes in the suggested diet to keep your weight loss on track for around 1 pound per week.
