869. Q: how many miles are in a 10k

A: 10 kilometers = 6.2 miles.
870. Q: hello mike i was wanting to know how if my free weights are better than my total gym i use them both but which is better?

A: In general free weights are better than machines because they work all the little stabilizer muscles that don't have to do much with machine work. They also allow for different paths of motion working muscles from different angles and for working through different sticking point in the exercise. Finally they allow for compound exercises like deadlifts, squats, and lunges. If you have the Total Gym advertised on TV by Chuck Norris, then it's also limited as to the exercises you can do, especially for the lower body (which is true for almost all machines actually). So you definitely want to use your free weights. The important thing though is that you have and use heavy enough free weights that they cause muscular failure in between 6 and 12 reps on most sets because that's the optimal fat-burning (and muscle-building) rep range. So you may want to get heavier free weights acoordingly. You can structure your workouts primarily around heavy free weights and then finish off your muscles with the Total Gym.
871. Q: i am toned all over but just have a little too much fat around the stomach, how do i burn it off?

A: This is a pretty common problem and not an easy one to solve, but it's definitely doable. Check out Q&A #216 and then its follow-up Q&A #696.
872. Q: Mike, the only workout methods i have are push-ups, a few 5-10 pound dumbells and a treadmill...so i really don't have much work-out equipment...is there any way i can make use with what i have?

A: Check out my no-equipment program. All you'd need to get is a chinup bar (see my product recommendations near the top) for that. There are a lot more exercises than just pushups that you can do with just your bodyweight! If you also get some heavier dumbbells, you could follow my dumbbell-only program. To get the maximum use out of dumbbells you want to get them heavy enough that you can only do any given exercise 12 times (reps) or so before needing a rest. Otherwise you might as well just stick with bodyweight-only exercises.

A: Around 40-45 pushups.
874. Q: I am a vegetarian woman who needs more protein, is Nitro Tech better than other whey products due to nitric oxide ingredient?

A: Nitro Tech is a perfectly good whey protein, but the stuff about nitroxen and insulogen is all marketing fluff. You can get exact same results from most other whey protein powders. Check out my whey powder recommendation above (right under the Mike's Fitness logo at the top of the page).

876. Q: how many calories does football burn

A: Football is an excellent fat-burning sport. A 180-pound man can burn around 700 calories in one hour of competitive football. Certain positions, like linemen specifically, will burn the more than others of course. And if you train for football with a mix of cardio and weights you'll burn far more calories in training.
877. Q: how long will it take to get rid of man boobs

A: Depends on how overweight you are, of course. Figure roughly how many pounds of fat you need to lose and allow at least 1 week per pound.

A: Check out Q&A #617. To add to what I say there, creatine has no known negative side-effects except upset stomach or discomfort in the stomach. It will also immediately make you gain a pound or two because of increased water retention -- that water weight disappears after you go off creatine. The effects of creatine vary from person to person, but in general they will not be dramatic. A 5-10% increase in strength (that's for somebody who's been training for awhile -- new trainees will make 5-10% strength progress easily without any supplements) should be considered very good.
