Ask Mike Your Fitness Question:
975. Q: I am doing exercise every morning without fail , but im not sure if what i am doing really loses weight so let me tell you what i do everyday , firstly i would take 5 mins for my warmup by riding the stationary bike , secondly i would carry weights for around 30 mins without resting more than 90 seconds , thirdly i would workout using a cardio machine for 30 mins i would increase the workout every week , forth i would swim around 16laps and finally i would do 100 sit ups, do you think what i do is really losing weight because i am concerned that i won't lose fats around my neck and face

A: Well you're certainly doing a lot! I would do that only every other day or else you risk overtraining (running your body down basically because it doesn't have enough time to recover between sessions).

When you carry weights, make sure you use weights heavy enough that you can only hold 30 seconds or so before your grip gives out. And really do walk with those weights. And only do it for no more than ten 30-second sets. It's a very unconventional but effective exercise. You may want to read my weight training article and see the sample programs to see what other weight exercises you could be doing.

You haven't said anything about your diet and that is easily as important as all your training losing fat. If you haven't already, read my nutrition article.

Finally, as I think I said in an earlier Q&A, the neck and face fats are only going to go once the rest of your fat leaves. So you'll need to lose quite a bit of fat before you really see your neck and face lean out. In order to lose that fat, you need to make sure both your diet and your training are good. Your training is more than halfway there, but I don't know about your diet. So read the Nutrition article and make sure your diet is up to par.

976. Q: hi mike , im 14 this year and i weigh around 128 pounds i exercise everyday with out fail and im in the school soccer team my whole body is considered quite fit only at 2 particular places and its on my face and around my neck , i don't really know which exercise would allow me to quickly lose those fats

A: I think I just answered your question #975... As I said there, it's impossible to target fat in any one specific part of your body. The best a person can do is lose fat overall and through doing that lose it in the 'trouble areas' too. However now that I know that you're just 14 and as fit as you are, you most certainly should NOT try to lose weight or fat!!! A little 'baby fat' is perfectly normal at your age and all you have to do is keep on doing what you're doing (maybe even a little less, as I said in #975) and your continuing growth and development will take care of whatever little extra fat you might have. Again, do NOT try to lose weight! Just keep on doing what you're doing and let your growth take care of the fats. Great job on being physically active at your age!
977. Q: how do you lose man boobs quick

A: You can't lose them quick, but if you have patience and discipline you most definitely lose them for good! Please read my weight loss article.
979. Q: I was wondering if your muscles should feel sore the next day when using a split routine and working until failure??

A: Sure, it's perfectly normal for the muscles you worked to feel sore the following day. The advantage of the split routine is that even though one muscle group is sore you can still work the other. Also note, that not being sore is perfectly OK too. Not everyone gets sore and your body will get used to hard workouts and will be getting sore less. Soreness or not, if you follow my sample programs you will see results!
981. Q: Mike, Is this normal? I have been resistance training every other day now for 3 weeks. These last 4 or 5 days after I am finished resistance training, I am totally exausted, and my muscles feel weak for a couple of hours. I only do 3 sets of 10 or 15, and I use 1 pound weights, or none at all. It takes about 2 hours for the total exaustion(sp) to go away. I am wondering if it is normal to be very tired like this after resistance training. Thanks so much!

A: That's probably a little beyond typical, but is most likely OK. Your muscles should be tired, but you should not have any adverse health side-effects beyond that. Tired muscles just show that you're pushing yourself hard in training. However after 3 weeks your body should start getting more comfortable with the resistance level and the same weights you used before should start seeming easier.

If you want, post again, reference this question (#981) so I know it's you and tell me what exercises you are doing (exercises, number of sets, rest period between sets) and more info about yourself (age, weight, height, sex) and maybe I'll have a couple more suggestions then.

982. Q: I have lost alot of weight and have hanging fat at the bottom of my stomach what exercise can I do to loose that

A: That's loose skin that's hanging there. It used to be filled out by fat but now that you've lost the fat, there's nothing to fill out the skin so it hangs in folds. Basic stretch marks in general can be helped by vitamin E lotions to some degree and they tend to disappear with time. But more serious cases when skin is literally hanging off are much tougher and there isn't much I can suggest beyond that same vitamin E lotion which will probably have little or no effect for you. Your best bet is to just be patient and over months and years it will get better. Alternatively you can consider cosmetic surgery.
983. Q: Is Corn bad for you? If it is, tell me why?

A: It's not bad for you, but if you're trying to lose fat, then corn is a subpar food choice. Reason is that most people's bodies are unable to fully digest corn and get many of its nutrients. And the flip side is that the corn that does get digested acts on your body much the same way as sugar does, leading to potential fat gains. This is not a problem for an average person, of course, but if you are trying to lose fat then eating foods like corn goes against what you're trying to accomplish.
984. Q: Why is it that when I go to sleep I set my alarm to go running in the morning and when I wake up I just turn off the alarm? I have no motivation to lose weight :(

A: Motivation is the hardest part about losing weight. If you have motivation, everything else is easy! Maybe mornings aren't the best time for your exercise -- nobody likes to get up, especially early, especially to do something you don't necessarily like :) Maybe after school or work is a better time to exercise. Also it helps to have a workout partner or, at least, somebody who's really pulling for you and who can provide a little outside motivation when needed. But in general motivation will have to be something you find within yourself. I suggest not worrying about the big picture or thinking how hard it will be to lose all those pounds or getting down on yourself for not exercising or eating wrong or not following the schedule... Instead just quietly start exercising without much of a grand plan. Just start doing it. Then equally without much fanfare start learning about nutrition and weight training at your own pace and start implementing the things you learn into your routine. And all the while, just do your best with exercising day-to-day. Good luck!
