Hey All! I've decided it is time to change the way I live and seriously get into shape. I'm tired of logging around that spare tyre around my waist, not having enough energy and the girls always looking at the other guy. So, here goes.....

Comments for this blog entry.

Howdy.  Looking forward to reading about your workouts and nutritional intake.  It's always good to see a fresh face.

Hi! Wow! Didn't expect anybody to reply so soon! I'm 23 years old, 5"8 and weight somewhere in the region of 173 pounds. I know I need to loose weight, but my main goal is to build muscle. I need to build up my upper body, which is no easy task! Feels like I'm doing all the right stuff, just not seeing the results!

Since you are slightly overweight now, my recommendation would be to plan your program into two parts: first, spend a few months losing weight and fat to get down to 155-160 pounds  and after that reverse course, start eating more and putting on some serious muscle.

Make sure to read my articles on nutrition, weight training, and weight and fat loss (first four articles under "Fitness Articles" on http://www.mikesfitness.com/articles.php )

After that you can use http://www.mikesfitness.com/article_fitnessguide.php to come up with a starter program (select "Lose Fat" as your first goal -- after several months you'll switch that to "Gain Muscle").

And definitely post here if you have any questions about anything whatsoever. And if you post your daily diet and exercise program I should be able to make some suggestions on those too.

Mike, I've read your article on how to loose that stubborn belly and lower back fat, but I'm still scared on going on a fatloss program. I've work so hard to build the little muscle I've gained. How can I loose the fat, yet maintain (or even BUILD) muscle. I'm eating and exercising like a freakin' health nut, yet no significant changes. Help!

First thing, you should start a new blog entry, go to "edit today's entry" and start a new page there.

Second, it is kind of difficult not to lose muscle along with the fat, so just know that it will happen.  But, if you lose weight slowly as you continue to lift weights, you will keep your muscle loss to a minimum.  Just be patient and it'll all work out.

Well, you won't be able to increase your muscle mass without gaining weight and with new weight will inevitably come new fat. Since you are already slightly overweight I would be hesitant to recommend further weight gains now.

By going on a fat loss diet you'll give yourself more "room to operate" so to speak. If you keep the calories up and the weight loss slow (one pound per week or less) you'll preserve most if not all of your muscle mass. And after that you can get serious about bulking up. I promise that even if you happen to lose some muscle during the cut, it will come back easily during the following bulk.

Em...maybe I'm just dense, but why do I need to start a new blog?
mike on 31-Jul-08
I think what BigBubba meant is that you should create a new blog entry every day (or every day that you work out or have questions anyway), instead of just adding to this entry. That way your blog is marked as recently updated and is shown in that order on the main blogs page. To create a new entry, click on "Edit Today's Entry" button when you are viewing your blog (instead of "Leave a Comment" which only adds comments to old entries).
