Welcome, nappygirl, glad to see your blog here! Your goal of 100 lean pounds is quite healthy for your height but it will still take time to lose almost 20% of your bodyweight while preserving muscle mass. So stay patient and take it one step at a time, just like you said. As far as cardio... if you are already dancing, then you are already getting heck of a cardio workout. If you currently dance 5 or more hours per week already then I would not add any more "regular" cardio on top of that. Instead, I would recommend adding some HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). You can search more about HIIT using the search feature in the upper right but basically a typical HIIT workout is 10-15 minutes of alternating 30-second maximum efforts with 30-second light effort. The key is to keep the 30-second max efforts truly all-out. For example, 30 seconds of max speed sprinting, then 30 seconds of walking, then 30 seconds of sprinting again, 30 seconds of walking, and so on for 10-15 minutes. When you just start HIIT you will likely find it exhausting and won't be able to do more than 3-4 minutes before being completely spent -- that's fine, just build up to three 10-15 sessions per week or so. That in addition to your dancing will provide your cardio. Weight training 3-4 times per week is good. I wouldn't go more than 5 weight training sessions per week for any length of time since it could lead to overtraining. Make sure to focus on compound exercises (deadlifts, squats, lunges, rows, pulldowns/pullups, presses) and not just on isolation stull like bicep curls or leg extensions. Also make sure to use heavy (for you!) weights that you can only lift 10-15 times in one set before needing a break. If you post your detailed diet here (meal by meal with foods and portion sizes) I'll see if I can offer some suggestions.Make sure to eat enough calories to lose weight very slowly, 1 pound per week or even slower. Slow weight loss allows you to preserve or even build muscle while losing fat and it keeps your metabolism up so you can keep losing weight all the way to your goal. Do not try to lose weight quickly. Feel free to ask any other questions you might have and good luck! |
