20 Year Old, 5 Feet 2 Inches, 140 Pounds
Q: I'm 20 years old, I am only 5'2' and weigh about 140 pounds. I have a decent amount of belly and chest fat that I am trying to get rid of by going to the gym 4-5 times a week. Each day I work out a different muscle (Chest and tris, bis and back, legs and abs, and shoulders). After my workout I do 30 minutes of cardio usually on the elliptical. I try to eat decent meals (nothing fried or fast food) but I am on no strict diet. I know I have to stick with it to see results but I'm curious if I will get the desired results (losing the chest and belly fat and gaining muscle) with this type of program.
A: Absolutely! You are doing pretty much everything that you need to do! Here're a few tips you may find useful to further finetune your already very good program:
- I know you are not on a formal diet, but you can still do small thing diet-wise like eat even more veggies, split bigger meals into two small ones, drink a lot of plain water throughout the day, and avoiding carb-heavy meals in the evenings. Read my Nutrition article for some other ideas on how to improve your diet.
- You are already training your whole body which is excellent! Remember to use fairly heavy (for you) weights. For most exercises you need to be using weight that you can't lift in good form more than 6-12 times before needing a rest. Use freeweight (barbell and dumbbells) exercises as much as possible in your training. Don't overdo it -- no more than about 20 sets or 1 hour in the gym per session. Finally, always stay safe and don't attempt to lift more than you can in good form.
- If you can, move cardio to non-weightlifting days. Instead, go home after your weighttraining workouts and eat something. It's not a huge deal either way, however.
But again, great job on what you are doing already! You will definitely achieve your goals and more!
