59 Year Old Exercising

Q: Hello Mike, I really love your comments. Question: I am 59 years old. Cycling 60 miles per week (road bike), bench 135 lbs. 5 reps. I am 5.8 160 lbs. + Yoga 2 times p/ week. Do you think this is ok for my age ?

A: Absolutely! Great job staying fit and active! You're doing far better than majority of people of any age, let alone your peers. The only thing is to keep a lookout for signs of wear and tear on your body and to take a few weeks off from exercise now and then to let any small nagging injuries heal up. This is a good idea at any age.

If you are looking for new exercise ideas, then I would look into doing pullups/chinups. They would exercise your upper back and biceps, which are mostly un-exercised by biking, bench press, and yoga. If you are not strong enough to do pullups -- and again, few of your peers would be -- you could do so-called negative or reverse pullups. With a negative pullup you'd use a chair or a bench to put yourself in a pulled-up starting position and then step off the chair and fight gravity as it drags you down. Fighting gravity on the way down stresses your muscles just as much as fighting it on the way up, so you get the same beneficial effects. There's also another variation on pullups where you do them normally but instead of hanging only by your arms, you leave your feet on a chair/bench and push off it with your toes as you pull yourself up.

You can buy a chinup bar to mount in virtually any doorway for under $20 like this: http://www.amazon.com/GoFit-GF-CUB-Chin-Up-Bar/dp/B0007W2FLI

But again, the pullups is just an idea if you are looking for a new exercise. You are doing great already, just keep it going!
