Beginner Using 80 Pound Weights

Q: I just started 5 different exercises for my upperbody and 3 for my lower body. each exercise consists of 3 sets of 10 reps. the weights average around 80 pounds. thats the most I could do for now. how much muscle could I gain per month? I also plan to gradually increase the weights.

A: If you are a beginner, male, and eating to gain weight (bulking), then you can probably shoot for 2-4 pounds per month for the first few months. After that the gains will slow down a bit. If you don't care about gaining fat and just start eating through the roof, you can gain even more muscle, but a lot of fat alongside it -- I would not recommend it.

You have the right idea about increasing weights you lift gradually as your strength builds up. Remember to eat enough to gain weight. Read my nutrition article on this website if you haven't already. And focus on big compound exercises to maximize muscle gain: squats, lunges, deadlifts, rows, pullups/pulldowns, bench press, shoulder press. Once you have those covered, you can throw in things like bicep curls or tricep extensions on top of it. Good luck!
