Body Composition Classified As Obese
Q: I'm 37 years old.Can u tell me what minimum body composition would I need in order to be classified as 'Obese'.is there a website which has this info for males and females of all ages.My dad who is 65 has a BC of 28% yet he has a large stomach. When I was at 28% I didnt nearly look as fat as he did.Is it possible that a lot of his fat is in his gut where as the fat in my body is more evenly distributed?
A: Yes, fat distribution can vary quite a bit from person to person, so 28% body fat can easily look different for you versus your father. It's also good to keep in mind that BF% measurements are a rather inexact science -- the best method of measuring BF% (underwater submergence) has standard error of 1-2%, caliper measurements can easily be off 3-4% even when done by a trainer, and bioimpedance scales and handheld measurements are usually completely unreliable.
As to your first question, 'obese' is medically defined as having BMI over 30. BMI is Body Mass Index -- see here. BMI does not take body composition into account -- an almost universally-recognized shortcoming, which generally makes BMI measures inferior to body fat percentage (BF%) measures. Unfortuantely there's no universally accepted definition of 'obese' in terms of BF%. But many sources consider 25% body fat to be the cutoff for obesity for adult males, so you can probably use that value. Neither BMI nor BF% take age into consideration. Hope that answered your question.
