Gym 3 Times A Week, Fartlek, Soccer
Q: Hi mike, could you go through what i'm doing in a week and tell me if its okay. I go to the gym 3 times a week, 1 day training the arms, 1 day training the legs and 1 day training the torso, i do 5 sets of 10 reps each and make sure by the last set, my muscles are tired, and i do fartlek training 2 times a week and play soccer 2 times a week. is this exercise routine okay for me to tone my muscles?
A: That sounds like a fine routine. Remember that there's no single perfect routine. There are many many equally valid training approaches and routines. The key is to change up your routine every 2-3 months and not just do the same thing year round. And when you do change routines try for something very different from what you've been doing. Right now you do relatively low volume (15 sets per week total, if I understood you correctly) and probably only the last set or two to failure. So for your next routine you may want to choose something higher volume and going to failure more often. You also may want to change reps-to-failure from 10 (which is about medium intensity) to something like 6 (high intensity) or maybe 15 (low intensity). Your fartlek training is a very good whole-body conditioner and especially appropriate for soccer since you are a player.
