Hold Position Where Muscle Is Working Hardest
Q: In my weight training I try to hold the position where the muscle is working the hardest(whilst moving slightly to work the muscle even harder) and hold that for a couple of seconds then repeat. so for a pull up that would be the position where I've pulled myself up as high as possible. Does this type of exercise have a name and how effect do you reckon it is ? personally I find very effective. Thanks in advance.
A: Yes, holding muscle under tension without lifting nor lowering the weight is commonly called isotonic training and some schools of training advocate it, especially for hypertrophy (increasing muscle size). It does seem to work better for some people than others, so if you find it working well for you, by all means stick with it. As I always say, it's a good idea to change your training program periodically and give different approaches a try -- you never know when you'll find something that works especially well for you.
