How Do Models Stay In Shape

Q: models..who are stereotyped as ppl who don't eat at all...seem to have a thin figure even though their metabolism must be severely slow...why is this the case when they are not fueling their body with food, and according to you, when they do eat, their body stores this as fat because it is in 'starvation body' this just isn't making sense to me.

A: There's a bunch of problems with that analogy... Models are not like 'regular people'. Vast majority of them have superior genetics that give them the sorts of physiques that normal people have to work very hard for. Combine that with the fact that most models are quite young, when your body is very forgiving to the things you feed it. You may know people like that -- they can eat all sorts of garbage and still look great. Most of us are not so lucky. So you should never compare yourself to models (or athletes -- see http://www.mikesfitness.com/content/lance-armstrong-calories-metabolism ).

Also, stereotypes or popular opinions are not necessarily true. The same stereotypes tell you that weightlifting makes you bulky. Most models, including those with the 'heroin chic' look in actuality probably do quite a bit to make sure they stay in good shape -- after all, their livelyhood depends on it! They know how to eat right and have the finest personal trainers. Jennifer Garner for example, has talked of of her diet and training in one interview I happened to catch and her regimen is not far off from those I offer here (though I can't of course claim any credit for that :)

Finally, the dirty secret is that many models and actors, both male and female, undoubtedly use steroids to help lose some extra fat or build some muscle. Studies show that over 5 percent of girls between 14 and 17 have used steroids at some point! Be assured that models who rely on their good looks for living are not above something that even teenage girls go for. Obviously none of them will admit it, but it would not be an eyeopening revelation for most people in the fitness industry.
