How Is It Possible For Body To Store So Much Fat
Q: I've been wondering -ten percent or less body fat is what is required to see the 'six pack'. I worked out that if i weigh 175 pounds [12 and half stone] and I have 10 percent body fat that is about 18 pounds of fat or almost 40 kilogram (40 bags of sugar). How is it possible to be that lean and your body to store so much fat. Where does it store that fat - as men store most of their fat on their torso (belly fat) - is the fat stored internally between your organs. Thanks in advance!
A: I think you made a conversion mistake -- 10% bodyfat for you would be 18 pounds or just under 9 kilograms (not 40 kgs). But yes, your body stores fat everywhere, even though the most noticeable area is around the waist. There's a layer of fat, called subcutaneous, that's under the skin throughout your body. In addition there's fat between organs as you said -- that's called visceral fat. So even if you are very lean and have a well-defined sixpack you still have a lot of fat in your body. In fact some basic amount of fat, around 3% of bodyweight is required for basic survival. Also keep in mind that all bodyfat measures are very imprecise so don't get too hung up about whether your bodyfat might be 12% or 14% since the margin or error is probably more than 2% anyway.
