How Much Sodium To Consume

Q: Approximately how much sodium should i consume while losing weight?

A: Unless you have a medical condition like high blood pressure I would not worry about consuming too much salt or sodium while on a healthy diet and following an exercise regimen. The main reason is that a healthy diet of the kind I recommend is naturally low in processed foods which is where most of our salt intake comes from. And by drinking a lot of water, exercising, and sweating a lot, you will also lose more sodium from your system than an average person would. So feel free to match or even exceed slightly the standard recommendation of 2300 mg of sodium daily.

The only exception may be on days when you want to look more lean than usual. Before and on those days you may want to cut the sodium intake to less than usual since the more sodium your system has, the more water weight you retain and the less lean you look. It will not make a dramatic difference, but might help a bit. But don't go on a permanent very low sodium diet unless your doctor prescribes it. Sodium is absolutely necessary for healthy function of our bodies, especially for physically active people.
