If Cardio Is Bad For Fat Loss Should I Stop Playing Sports

Q: If cardio is bad for fat loss do you suggest that I stop playing the sports that I love?

A: No, by all means continue playing sports! Cardio works against you in fat loss only when you're losing weight quickly and without weight training. So all you need to do is eat enough to make sure your weight loss is slow (1 pound per week is a very good target for sustained fat loss) and, hopefully, also do some whole-body weight training on the side to further maintain your muscle mass.

Even without weight training many sports will provide you with anaerobic benefits (same benefits that weight training provides) in addition to their aerobic (i.e. cardio) benefits. This happens due to maximal efforts such as sprints in soccer and other sports, jumping in basketball or volleyball, tackling and blocking in football, etc. So many sports (usually team sports), are actually a superior form of training to long-distance running or biking as far as fat loss goes. So continue your sports and make sure you eat enough to not lose weight too fast. If you can, do weight training on the side. If you can't, you should still be alright.
