Knee Pain During Warm Up
Q: hi mike, ive been squatting for around 6 months. but today my knee was hurting. i was at the gym, warming up with just the barbell. i went down and it started hurting.. generally i'll get a litle knee pain on my first warm up set, but it goes away, this time it didnt. it wasnt like miserable pain or anything, but it also wasnt a little tickle. kind of in between. my stance is semi-wide with my toes pointed out if that helps
A: Most likely it's nothing serious, but you do need to let it heal. Hopefully you stopped after you felt that first twinge. Never ever 'work through' bone/joint/tendon injuries. The only good pain is muscle soreness -- everything else is a sign to you to take it easy and not work the affected part of the body till it fully heals.
For the future you may want to extend your warmup routine for legs to include walking and light jogging before doing anything else -- that'll warm up and lubricate knee joints a little more. If you have an opportunity, I would also consult with a therapist regarding that 'usual' pain you get on the first set which goes away later -- it really isn't something that should happen at all.
Good luck healing up and getting back to working your legs!
