A: No, not as far as I know. Gynecomastia in most guys is caused by their simply being overweight with a some of the extra fat collecting in the chest area. In teenagers it can also be caused by temporary hormonal changes which go away with age. I am not a fan of sugar substitutes, but I've never heard of a direct link between them and gynecomastia.

A: That should be fine -- DOMS can and does appear anywhere, from the entire muscle group to any one small area. Just make sure your shoulder isn't hurting more than before.

A: You would get much better at situps, but that's about it. You will not lose any noticeable amount of fat or get anabdominal six-pack. If you went on a crash diet you could lose a lot of weight, but as I explained many times that's actually a very BAD idea unless you are grossly overweight. Crash diets are almost guaranteed to fail in the long run with all the weight coming back.

A: What you heard is not correct. If you truly eat healthy, there's absolutely no reason why you'd store fat from a night meal. In fact, I would recommend that you do eat (healthy, of course!) as close to your bedtime as possible in order to lessen the amount of time your body had to go without food.

A: If you have reoccurring stomach cramps then you definitely want to talk to your doctor about it. However assuming it's an isolated event, then doing sit-ups at that time should not make the situation worse. Sit-ups work skeletal muscles in the abdomen and hips, while stomach cramps occur in deeper intestinal muscles.

Furthermore wrestling trains both top strength and power as well as endurance. As I said, it is the best single whole-body exercise anyone can ask for.

A: Depends on what you mean by big. If you're 17-25 years of age or so, you can probably put on 1-1.5 inches on the arms and maybe 2-3 inches on the chest in that time under ideal conditions. That's quite a bit. You can do even more if you completely don't care about getting fat, though that's probably not what you want and I wouldn't recommend it.

A: Yes, it's possible. Those device are not reliable at all. Your best bet is to get measured with body fat calipers by a trainer in the gym. Alternatively you can measure yourself using calipers (see the banner above, below 'got fat?') with some practice and it's much more likely to be closer to correct value than the body composition scale or handheld device.

A: OK, the just reduce portion sizes slightly in 2-3 meals since last couple of weeks you've been gaining a little too fast anyway. Then as you get back into workout routine if you start losing weight or not gaining it fast enough, then you can add those calories back in. Stick with doctor's advice and don't try to push your shoulder too hard too fast. Good luck!

A: It's not because you're tall, but because you are lean (meaning most of your weight is in muscle rather than fat), young, and physically active. As I said before, big appetite is a very good thing. Just eat good healthy stuff like veggies, fruits, whole grains, lean meats, etc. and not junk like pizza and burgers. And don't try to lose weight.

A: It's all a matter of degrees. You don't HAVE TO eat 5-6 times per day to make progress, but it would make your progress faster and better. If you absolutely can't do it, eat 3 times/day, but eat healthy and eat portions big enough to keep you on track, whether slowly losing weight or slowly gaining weight and muscle.

A: Sorry, it's not that obvious at all. You should be looking at two things if you want to answer that question:

  • Will eating 1000 calories of sugar make me gain more or less fat than eating 1000 calories of fat?
  • Am I likely more likely to eat 1000 calories of sugar in one sitting or 1000 calories of fat?

Muscle As Percentage Of Weight Loss

Q: If someone goes from 600 pounds to 200 pounds shouldn't a small percentage of that weight loss come from muscle?

A: Yes, in case of virtually any significant (say more than 30 pounds as a rule of thumb) weight loss, the lost weight will come at the expense of both muscle and fat. The goal is to minimize the muscle loss and maximize the fat loss. Small percentage of weight loss, as you said, will come at the expense of muscle, but the goal is to keep that percentage as small as possible.

A: Whenever you have recurring problems like lower back or joint pain you should definitely see a doctor or a physical therapist before starting off on any exercise program (the same ought to be true for everyone, not just those with obvious aches and pains, but DEFINITELY for somebody like you). Your doctor or therapist will be able to suggest the exercises that are safe for you to perform.
