Workout Program For 13 Year Old

Q: hey mike...can you give me a good workout program for a 13 year old boy? I dont know much about this kind of stuff:) So if possible can you include how many days in the week i should do, how long should each workout be, and an explantion of the workouts them selves. Thank you mike!

A: Sure, take a look at this program. It's a good beginner program and will give you a good strength and muscular endurance foundation to build on later. You can do that program 4 times/week on your own at home.

Billy Banks

Q: Mike are you familiar with the product called Billy Bands which comes with 3 DVDs? I have it and havent made use of it very much. I tried the Basic Training DVD once and then gave up. It seemed too hard(but i was able to do it) Do you think it is a good program to keep up with?

A: I think you're talking Billy Blanks's program that uses resistance bands. My approach to training and fat/weight loss is different from his, but his program is above average for that style of training (cardio + light weights/resistance), so I would encourage you to stick with it.

3 Sets Of 10 Reps

Q: reply to 1280, so should i change the amoutn of sets to 3, and like 10 reps max to fit me?

Feel Fat When I Sit

Q: mike when i stand up i have a good upper body with little fat which i can see my not solid packs but when i sit seems that there is more fat so i feel weird

A: That's normal. When you sit down you typically relax, hunch over and/or lean forward a bit so what you suck up naturally when standing up bulges out and whatever little skin and fat you have on your stomach gets squeezed and folds over a bit. All that gives a different appearence from when you're standing up. There's no way of avoiding it aside from sitting perfectly straight up all the time.

Following Program For 2 Months

Q: reply to 1277, well ive been following the one i posted for probably 2 months now. so should i change to yours? by the way, ive been doing yours for about 5 days now, and i must say i havent had a tricep burn this good in months. perhaps i should stick with yours for lke 1 month or so?

A: Sounds good! Like I said, changing up programs every couple of months is a good idea so yeah, go ahead with my program for a month or two.

Fitness Test

Q: mike i have this fitness test in 2 months time can you give me a workout that can improve my fitness and stamina

A: It'd be easier for me to advise you if you told me what your fitness test consists of. For this answer I'll assume that the test is a mix of 2-mile run, pushups, and situps which pretty typical. The preparation for such a test should be two-fold: one, losing fat/weight to make yourself lighter and two, practicing and practicing often the actual running, pushups, and situps.

A: That's a tough one. I suppose It could be a decent forearm exercise, but it really depends on how strong the rubber band is and how much tension you're creating in it. See for yourself: if you can draw it 15 times or so back-to-back without rest in between fairly easily, then it's not much of a workout for you.

Stomach Flu

Q: Person from 1260 - Well Mike, I didn't go to the doctor because shortly after I posted that question, I threw up. It truns out I had the stomach flu. Thanx for trying to help. Nothing serious. Its been 2 days now and my stomach flu is gone and I feel much better.

A: Glad to hear you're OK! Make sure you're fully recovered and eating normally again before you hit the weights.

12, 10, 8, 6 Reps

Q: In my weight training i do 12 rep then 10 with more kgs then 8 then 6 with failure.In some exercises that goes 12,10 and then 6(instead of 8).I wanna do 4 sets.What would u recommend for the forth set?Should i go for 12,10,6 and one more time 6 reps?I wanna get the best possible results.

Weight Training 45 Minutes To 1 Hour

Q: Is it true that u should only do weight training for 45 mins or 1 hour MAX in order to get good results?Also,it is ok to train 2 body parts each time(different)?Problem is that if i do so i have to spent 1,5 hour or more to do all the exercises needed.If i do one part per day i leave one part of body untrained each week(i need to 5 days this way to do one part every day and i do 4,i have Sunday off and one day in the middle also off in order to rest more cause i tend to train as hard as i can).What is ur suggestion?Iam a little confused how i ll make my program.

A: In general, yes, muscular endurance workouts will have sets of 12-30 and even more reps with lighter weights. The sets may not necessarily be to failure. There will also typically be more sets per week as compared to strength/muscle-building/fat-burning workouts.

A: The last bit of belly fat is by far the hardest to lose. It usually requires not only good weight training and cardio program, but also a very good diet. A: Sorry, honestly not sure what you mean. But in any case, it really doesn't matter I think -- if it looks good to you, then doesn't matter if it's considered double chin or not.

Increasing Or Maximum Weights

Q: Hey Mike. I excersise 3 times a week, 50 mins a session. I would like to know if its better to do increasing wieghts (i.e. sets of 8kg, 10kg, 12kg 14kg) or to do all of the sets at maximum weight. And how many sets per excercise should i do.

A: I would recommend doing top or near top weight for most or even all sets. In your example, if you can do 14kgs for, say, 8 reps, then 8kgs is way too little and just becomes a warm-up set. Maybe do 12kgs for 10-12 reps for 1-2 sets and then do 14kgs for 6-8 reps for 1-2 sets.

Smoke Pot And Weight Train

I have been working out with heavy weights for 16 weeks and am happy with the improvemts in both my body and its ability. How Do You Know If Someone Has A Double Chin

A: Just by looking head on. Many if not most people have it -- a small deposit of fat right under the chin that hangs down enough that it appears as a 'second chin' when you're looking at the person head on. A 'second chin' is not necessarily an indicator that the person is overweight, though it's certainly a lot more pronounced in overweight people.

Hard Or Defined Muscles

Q: how do you get hard muscles, rather than defined muscles?

A: As I said in http://www.mikesfitness.com/content/strong-or-hard-muscles you have no control over the hardness of the actual muscle. By losing the fat the covers the muscles (in other words, by decreasing your body fat levels), you can increase the apparent hardness of the muscle. Aside from that however, the only way you can get harder muscles is by tensing/flexing them.

How Many Calories In One Push Up

A: Very few. You are doing yourself a disservice by approaching pushups with a 'burn calories' perspective. The main point of pushups and other weight training exercises is not to burn calories while doing them (though they will burn some), but to provide enough stress to physically damage your muscles which will in turn force your body to repair them afterwards which in turn burns far more calories and raises your metabolism.

Q: Person from 1232- My typical day would be Breakfast- 1 chewy bar(Quaker granola) Lunch- at school peanut butter and jelly sandwitch (white bread) with iced tea sometimes a bag of chips Dinner- two scoops of potatoes(big scoops) 2 schnitzels, and grated beets. I would have a very recent snack in between in between all of them like Chewy Granola Bars(Quaker) Fruit snacks, Fruit Roll ups. And for drink i would drink a lot of V8 Splash and Cranberry Juice. A: If you are a beginner, slow weight loss through a healthy balanced diet combined with weight training and little or no cardio will also allow you to build muscle. You can get a complete sample program by filling out the Fitness Guide specifying weight loss or tone as your goal.

Constant Hunger

A: You'd need to tell me more about yourself before I can help -- age, gender, weight, physical condition, physical activity level, current diet (what and how much you eat in all the meals). Post back with all the info and I should be able to give some advice.

Bench Press Strength At 1500 Calories

Q: (Re: 1222) Mike, thanks for the kind words and advice. My new plan is to not be so uptight about the protein intake but still try to increase it and to add 50 calories per week until I hit 2000. One thing I had noticed was that my strength on the bench press (which is where I gauge my strength) has not improved since I went to 1500 cals about 6 months ago, I had figured that was probably due to my decreased caloric intake. High Carb Diet

Q: carbohydrates like brown rice and wholmeal bread provide energy. I eat a diet which is fairly high in carbs. My question is - why is eating a diet fairly high in carbs seen by many as being bad. I understand that white flour carbs like white bread aren't nutritious and contain little. Surely goods carbs like fibrous - hence filling - wholemeal carbs - cannot be any near as bad. Of course I'm aware that eating more carbs than I need in energy(calories) a day will make me overweight. By the way my weight is very constant - despite my high carb diet.

41 Year Old Lost 90 Pounds

Q: Mike, I recently read your article recommending a 43%: 30%: 27% protein to carb to fat calorie ratio to burn fat and have been (for the past week) attempting to meet this (with some success). Over the past year, I have lost approximately 90 pounds and have gone from 282 pounds to 194 pounds (41-year-old, 5'10' male). I did this by reducing my caloric intake to about 1500 calories per day but determined that my caloric intake was approximately 25%: 45%: 30% protein to carb to fat caloric intake.

A: If you cycle, then you stay on creatine for some time and then go off creatine for some time and then start it again. Different people recommend different amounts of time on and off , but usually it's around 8-12 weeks on creatine and 4-8 weeks off creatine.

Calories For 125 Pound Female

Q: how many calories does a 125 pound, 5foot, 5inch, 28 year old female burn in a day?

A: It's impossible to say exactly because that depends on your lifestyle/activity level, your metabolism level, as well as the actual diet -- diets higher in protein and lower in carbs allow you to consume slightly more calories without gaining fat. I'd say ballpark figure of 1600-1700 calories for an average woman, but can easily be over 2000 calories if you are physically active.

Protein Shake With Nothing Else

Q: If i take my protein shake alone with nothing else to accompany it will it have the same effect like when i use it together with some carbs?I have heard that it is not consumed if i take it alone.

A: In general, yes, you want to eat complete meals with carbs, protein, and fats. But a protein-only shake will still give you more benefit than no shake at all, so if you absolutely cannot have a complete meal, then a shake is a good option.

A: Chubby look on the face past teenage years is usually due to some extra fat elsewhere on the body -- in other words you need to drop fat overall and your extra facial fat would go away as well. Do you have a bit of a extra fat on or around your stomach? If you do, then working to lose that will take care of the face as well.

Snow Shoveling Workout

A: Actually, yes, shoveling snow is a GREAT whole-body workout! Prepare to be sore the following day :) You will be working out:

  • Legs, especially if you bend your knees a bit and then straighten them out when lifting the full shovel.
  • Core muscles -- lower back, abs, butt when bending at the waist and then straightening back out. Lower back will get the heaviest workout in exercises like shoveling or picking stuff up.

Lose Weight In 2 Weeks

Q: I want to lose weight in 2 weeks

A: 2 weeks is not enough time for significant quality fat loss that makes sure that the fat STAYS OFF! It's very easy to go on a crash diet and lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks but it's one of the worst things you can do, both health-wise and fatloss-wise. Such rapid weight loss results in losing more muscle than fat and losing muscle in turn results in gaining fat and weight later on. So in a couple of months you'll likely be back where you started only with even more fat! That's the end result of 95% or so of rapid weight loss diets.

A: You are absolutely NOT fat! In fact, you're closer to being underweight than to being overweight. So definitely pay no attention to what your friends are saying about that. Do NOT try to lose weight because that may jeopardize your continuing healthy growth.

Scared To Lose Weight

Q: Mike, I seem 'scared' to lose weight. When I say scared, I mean that: It seems like once you want to try to lose weight, eat better or exercise, it is very strict and very much of a hassle. Its like, eating right and exercising can be very dull and mind boggling. I don't think I can do it.

Weird Chest Muscle

How Do You Tone Muscles

Q: How do you tone muscles?

A: Muscle toning is a very misleading term. The only thing you can physically do to your muscles is either grow or reduce them in size. You have virtually no control over their shape. What you CAN do is lose the fat that covers up the muscle and expose the defined shape of the muscle to view instead of the shapeless fat. That gives the effect of 'muscle toning', even though it's all about losing the fat rather than anything to do with the muscle. So, to summarize, toning muscles is actually just losing fat!

Q: Mike i saw on a Raisin Bran cereal box that said you could lose weight by replacing 2 of your meals with a bowl of bran cereal. What do you think of that? It sounds like it would work.
