Shoulders 4x A Week

Q: hey mike, in your 4 day push/pull schedule, why do you do shoulders 4x a week? isnt that too much? mon. and thurs. is shoulder press, tues + fri. is upright rows.

A: Good observation! The reason I included a shoulder exercise on both pull and push days is that while shoulder presses stress mainly anterior deltoids (front shoulder), the upright rows spread the work to anterior deltoid, medial deltoid (side shoulder) and traps. A narrow grip on the upright rows stresses the traps more while a wide grip stresses the medial deltoid more.

Knee Pain During Warm Up

Q: hi mike, ive been squatting for around 6 months. but today my knee was hurting. i was at the gym, warming up with just the barbell. i went down and it started hurting.. generally i'll get a litle knee pain on my first warm up set, but it goes away, this time it didnt. it wasnt like miserable pain or anything, but it also wasnt a little tickle. kind of in between. my stance is semi-wide with my toes pointed out if that helps

2. im gonna start your 4 day push/pull schedule. on tuesday, for back. can i substitute straight leg deadlft for weighted hyperextensions?

A: 1. There's a few things you can do to build up your pullup strength:

Not Good At Sticking To Plans

Q: Hey Mike. I'm from Q:1578. Well I am 100% sure I know that I cannot stick with the 2000 calorie diet that good because I'm not that good at sticking to plans. I've been surfing the net for a while and read some interesting things. These are the things I am going to do to lose weight and hopefully gain muscle while I'm at it: Water: I will drink water according to the color of my urine. If my urine is not clear, I will drink more water. Tea: Plenty of Antioxidants, doctor said I need those. Eating: No obvious junk food like pizza and candy etc.

My Legs Are Really Skinny

Q: Hi mike, I started trainning really hard a couple of months ago, but my problem is leg day, my legs are really skinny, and even though I train them really hard and drink my protein, aminos, creatine I'm afraid of them not growing along with my upper body. How many leg days should I have on my weekly program which as of right now is Mon: Chest, abs.. Tue:leg day Wed:Should, traps.. Thrs:back, calves Fri:arms, abs. Should I repeat leg day on SAT? or should I just work one day really hard and let them rest for the rest of the week? thanks.

How Much Calories To Drop After A Bulk

Q: hi mike i was bulking up now im 5 kg heavier so how much calories should i drop ?

A: Hopefully you gained those 5kgs slowly, over 3-4 months at least. If you want to start cutting down fat now, then I'd start by dropping 500 calories from your bulking diet, mostly at the expense of carbs (especially in evening meals). Then monitor your weight and adjust calories up or down to keep yourself on track to lose weight no faster than 1kg every two weeks.

Post-Training Meal

Q: Hello Mike, I'm a 31 year old male, 6'1'', 220 pounds, about 20% body fat. I do my weight/cardio training early in the mornings, before work. After my workout I eat my breakfast/post-training meal. It consist of a sanwich made of two regular size slices of whole weat bread, two slices of low fat cheese and two slices of 0% turkey breast ham, a 50grm serving of oat squares/raisin bran cereal dry (no milk), an apple and a granola bar.
Can you tell me the aprox nutritional value of this meal?
Is this enough to recuperate after my workout? Thnx.

How To Firm And Lift Butt

Q: how to firm and lift butt

A: Two things: you need to lose some fat overall and you need to do some lower-body exercises to build up your butt muscles a bit. The main thing is to lose some extra fat -- if you didn't have extra fat overall you wouldn't have it on your butt either. Unfortunately you can't pick and choose and tell your body to lose the fat ONLY on the butt, but you can lose fat overall and the butt fat will diminish along the way. Read this to learn how to best lose fat.

I Am Really Out Of Shape

Q: Mike, I cant remember the last time I posted. I was the 6 foot 200 lb male. I am now the 6'1 230 pound male. My weight shot up. I need to do something and fast. It is getting hard to breath and I am really out of shape.I seem to have a tight schedule and need a routine in which I can stick to. I will try (not sure if I WILL) to eat only 3 spaced out meals like normal people. I will also TRY to play basketball or something to help myself get in shape. I need more things to do though but Im not sure what?

Work Each Muscle Group 2x A Week

Q: hey mike, i need a workout routine in which i work each muscle group 2x a week. i feel i get better results from this, but i cant find one. can u help me?

A: Thanks for giving me an idea -- I just added this routine that does exactly what you're looking for.

Monounsaturated To Polyunsaturated Fat Ratio

Q: Mike, can you please tell me what a good monounsaturated to polyunsaturated fat ratio is?
ratio

A: I don't have a strict ratio, but the main bulk of your fat intake should be in monounsaturated fats. You will almost always get some saturated fats, especially if you eat animal products, and that's fine too. For polyunsaturated fats, try to get more of omega-3 polyunsaturated because almost any diet will already include sufficient amounts of omega-6 polyunsaturated.

Weigh 147 Kgs

Q: Hi mike im seriously overweight but you said that losing fat too fast is no good but if i were to lose fat or weight like 1pound per week i would be taking 2 years just to have a BMI of 25 . im 23 this year and i weigh 147 kgs and my height is 1.80cm so i think i need to lose more instead of the regular 1 pound but i read if you lose more than the 1 pound your body will also lose some muscle mass so if i were to go to the gym everyday and lose weight at the same time will i be preserving my muscles ? is that a good way ?

Losing Weight Very Fast

Q: Hi mike when people lose fat sometimes they lose some muscle mass right ? so if someone is losing weight very fast it might not be fat am i right ?

A: That's exactly correct. The slower your weight loss is, the more likely the lost weight is actual fat. Losing weight too quickly can result in lost muscle which in turns greatly increases chances of the fat coming back (because your muscle is a fat-burner so the less muscle you have, the less fat you can burn).

Weights On Stomach During Situps

Q: Hi mike!If i put weights on my stomache when doing situps will it be more benificial to me?Thanks!

A: Sure, that's a good way to make the exercise more intense. This especially makes sense if you can do many (20 or more) situps in a row. I would advise keeping the weight up more on the chest than the stomach for maximum effectiveness. Just remember that situps alone will not make you lose a lot of weight or give you a six pack -- you need a complete diet and weight training program for that as described here

Q: hi mike im serverly overweight and the problem is i cant control my hunger is there any way because i really need help do you think by seeing a doctor they will give me pills to curb my hunger??, btw i heard that pills have side effects on you so im very concern i rather do it the old natural healthy way. i will aways think of food and will feel hungry unless i eat until im so full and that would be alot and i mean alot i feel really guilty all this years

Why Do People Spread Their Meals

Q: actually why do people spread their meals

A: Eating many small meals throughout the day is best for both losing fat and gaining muscle. Except for brief periods of intense physical activity (such as workouts) your body needs energy steadily throughout the day -- eating many small meals supplies that energy. Otherwise, if you just have 2 or 3 big meals then those meals give a big dose of energy to your body that it has no use for -- the result is that those extra calories go into fat deposits.

Brown Rice, Potatoes, Wheat Bread

Q: reply to 1560, so is brown rice, potatoes, wheat bread all low GI foods?

A: Brown rice is a good food choice. For bread, make sure it's a whole-wheat bread, not just 'wheat'. Potatoes are best replaced with sweet potatoes. If you absolutely want to eat regular potatoes, stick with with baby red potatoes. And for all potatoes, regular or sweet, best way of cooking them to keep GI low is to boil them.

Spreading My Meals

Q: hi mike im spreading my meals to 4 meals a day so can you tell me the time to take my meals as i start my day at 6

A: Try to spread meals evenly throughout the day, from morning breakfast to bedtime. So, assuming you go to bed at 10pm, you might eat at 6am, 11am, 4pm, and 9pm (every 5 hours or so). You can move them up or down by an hour or so as need to fit your schedule better.

Eating Fat Makes You Fat

Q: hi mike why does carbohydrates make you fat and not eating fat itself make you fat ? its so weird , i thought eating fat would make you fat? which is better a lower carbo meal with higher fat intake or higher carbo meal with lower fat intake ?

Low Or High GI Carbs

Q: mike, if your bulking. and eating aroudn 6-7 meals daily. should u be eating low or high GI carb sources? usually ill have wheat bread, brown rice, rolled oats, and potatoes for my carbs for meals..

A: Always always always eat low-GI foods! On a bulk you just eat a lot, but you still eat low-GI as much as you can.

Q: hi mike, i am so close to getting a six pack, but there is this layer of fat that wont go away! i can see it if i pull the fat down on my stomach...how should i get red of this? Thank you.

A: Getting that last bit of fat off is hard. First off, if you haven't yet, read my fat-loss article. If you haven't been doing the things I mention there you need to start doing them.

Q: Nutrition wise: I have a question about eating brown rice and sweet potato.

When To Wear Weightlifting Belt

Q: Mike, when exactly and why should one wear a weightlifting belt? How exactly does it help and for what exercises should it be used?

A: This is a tricky subject. Simple answer is that you should wear the belt if your doctor or therapist tells you to :)

Working Out For 3 Weeks And Love It

Q: Hi Mike,

This is probably the most useful fitness site on the web. I have been working out for 3 weeks on your 5 day weight training while doing 30min cardio on the other two days. I have two questions for you:

1. According to your fitness plan for me to get 'cut', I need to do 3 30-min cardio a week. Since I do two of those sessions on bike, is it okay to breakdown the third session in two 15min cardio on bike after finishing my regular weight training on one of the other five days?

How Much Weight Should I Lose Each Week

Q: How much weight should i lose each week in order to lose only fat?How much pounds is 1 kgs?

A: The slower you lose weight, the more likely it will be actual fat. But for most people 1 pound per week is a good target pace. 1 pound is about one half of 1 kilogram (1 kg = 2 pounds).

Body Starts Burning Fat After 20 Minutes

Q: Mike i dont understand something. It is said that after 20 mins of cardio the body starts burning fat.If it so then the calories we burn before we reach the 20 mins where are from?muscles?water? If it isnt fat then it has to be something right?

Also the hiit cardio lasts less than 20 mins. Then how it burns fat?Is it maybe cause it is a mixed form of aerobic and anaerobic exercise?

I ve also heard that its good in order to lose fat to make 4-5 times a week 30-40 mins cardio at brisk pace or 3 times a week hiit.Is it ok?

Glass Of Water Before And After Every Meal

Q: hi mike ,i would drink 1 glass of water before and after every meal so that i wont feel hungry as i have a very big appetite is this good ?

A: Sure, if that works for you, go for it! Personally I usually don't drink much water (or other liquid) right at the meal time -- it dilutes your stomach acid and makes it tougher to digest food. For some people that can actually lead to stomach discomfort. But if you experience no such problems, then drink away! If you do find that this causes digestion problems, then just drink most of your daily water in between meals.

How Many Calories Are Burnt During Sit Ups

Veins Pop Out When Lifting Heavy

Q: is it ok that that when i lifting heavy stuff the veins pop out of my arms...(i am 13)

A: Yup, that's perfectly natural and normal. When you perform intense physical activity, the blood flows to and from the muscles doing the work increases filling up the arteries and veins. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the muscles allowing them to do work and carries back the 'waste' products of muscle metabolic activity. The effect is usually most visible in forearms/hands where the veins are nearest to the skin.

Reduce Calories For The Week Of Rest

Q: Mike i have a problem with my back and this week i wont go to gym at all.The previous week i didnt get also cause it was rest period after 2 months of continuus heavy whole weight training. In order to keep my muscles and not gain any fat should i eat more or less this week.Maybe i ll need another week rest after this one also.Should i reduce my calories or not?

Drink Plenty Of Water

Q: Mike, I have read that for people ingesting large amounts of protein (like 1 gram per pound of body weight) should be sure to drink plenty of water. How much is enough? Is the recommended 64 oz. per day enough?

A: Yes, I think 64oz is a good target for daily water intake. If you like drinking water and drink even more than that, that's perfectly fine too.

250 Calories From Cardio

Q: Hi Mike. When doing diet to lose some fat can i do some cardio in order to burn lets say 250 calories and eat 250 calories more? Can i do the opposite? In other words should i count the calories from cardio to my diet?I have been told that in order to lose fat its better to do both. But if i lose 250 calories from cardio and 250 from eating less calories(250+250=500!)then i will lose more than one pound a week. What i should do?Should i count cardio or not in my daily calories?

Should Not Exercise Every Day

Q: hi mike im the guy from 1533 , i kinda forgot to add this in another part so anyways i should not do those kind of exercise every day am i right, i need to have at least 1 day break to recover

A: Yup, that's a very good idea to take a day or two (or even more, especially if you do heavy weightlifting) off each week to let your body recover.

Eating A Lot After Exercising

Q: hi mike im the guy from1533 i tend to eat alot after i finish what i do and im scared if i eat alot ill grow fat

A: Don't worry about that -- eating generously after exercising is extremely unlikely to make you fat. Just make sure you eat healthy stuff and not junk.
