Water Diet

Q: Why isn't okay to go on a water diet but eat very small amounts of food(two fists of food)??

A: What you are describing is called 'starvation diet' and is almost always a bad idea unless your doctor prescribes it for health reasons. As a way to lose weight and fat it is almost certain to fail. Please read through my response to http://www.mikesfitness.com/content/not-eat-every-other-day for reasons why.

HIIT Cardio More Efficient Than Regular Cardio

Q: HIIT cardio more efficient than regular cardio?

A: Yes, see http://www.mikesfitness.com/content/cardio-and-hiit-to-lose-fat for a discussion of HIIT. I prefer it to regular cardio when the goal is to burn fat.

Train To Failure On Every Set

Q: mike, so today while i was at the gym, and i was arguing with a guy there i know. He said that you're sposed to train to failure on every set you do, but i argued it was overtraining, and u should only do like the final set to failure. we were discussing a schedule in which you do around 18 sets.

in the end it was a draw, because he is bigger then me, so i dont have much evidence on him.what do you think?

Avoid Homemade Foods When Cutting

Q: When i do the cutting phase after the bulking should i avoid foods that contain oil even if that is the good one?One bodybuilder told me that i should avoid foods like that cause even though they are home made and healthy they contain much oil which has a lot of fat(and calories as well). What do u think?

A: It all depends on your situation. If you have a good control of your diet and know more or less exactly what you are eating, then it benefits you to have 20-30% of your calories come from healthy fats.

Run Once A Week On A Bulk

Q: When on a bulking diet is it ok to run only once a week for thrity to forty five minutes? I am really trying to get a sixpack, but it is just difficult to get to the gym 7 days a week. I am on your five day a week heavy volume program as well. I am 23 5'7 about 150-152. I am on the brink of seeing my six pack really well( right now I can see slightly, and really well when I flex) and I just dont want to mess up. I know I need to get into the shape I want NOW because the longer I want the harder it will be.... Thanks Mike

Do A Pullup In One Week

Q: how can i do a pullup in one week without any weights

A: I can't promise you can progress to a pullup in just one week, but within a month it's certainly very doable -- check out http://www.mikesfitness.com/content/too-weak-to-do-a-pullup for my advice.

Muscle Milk Supplement

Q: hello, I'm 17 and I just got into wrestling. I've been working out for a few months and i've seen big gains but now i'm worried about controlling my weight. Would Muscle Milk be a good choice for a supplement?

A: Muscle Milk is an OK supplement, but just like other protein supps there is no magic in it that you can't get from regular healthy foods like lean meats or fish. Muscle Milk by itself will certainly not help you control your weight.

What Can I Do To Get In Shape

Q: what i can do to get in shape

A: I can't give you any detailed answer to that without knowing more about you and what kind of shape you want to be in, but for anyone who wants to get in shape, learning to eat right is the most important thing, followed by being generally active, whether playing sports, running, skiing, swimming, jogging, biking, weight training or anything else.

Is It Necessary To Count Anything When Losing Weight

Q: Mike, a lot of people believe in numbers when it comes to losing weight. Body weight, calories, waist size, grams of fat, etc. Isn't it possible to not have to count anything. A lot of people I talk to who lost weight just say, 'I ate healthier and exercised'. I wish it was just as easy done as said. I mean I would just like to lose weight by 'Eating healthier and exercising.' Do you think its really necessary to count anything when it comes to losing weight?

Calories In Kickboxing Training

Q: mike.. i got 2 questions.

1) i just started kickboxing, and am curious how many calories you think are burned. we start with 6 minutes of jumproping, then get into a 25 or so minute stretching routine. followed by about 15 minutes of shadowboxing, and then we end by punching the bags or practicing against the instructor for about 15 minutes.

2) what should i do so i dont lose any weight? im trying to bulk right now.

A: 1. I'd guesstimate that burns around 500 calories.

Feel Sick While Working Out

Q: If you start to feel sick to your stomach while working out, should you stop immediately? Is it ok to just work through it? Today, somehow, I seemed to have pushed my self really hard. I began to feel nauseous about half way through my workout. Today was leg day and I decided to go really heavy on squats about 6 sets of 7-8 reps at 225. And some decline leg presses. I just came off of a one week break, if that matter. I am 23 about 5'8 150lbs and I have been training for over a year. It is not normal at all for to feel sick during a workout. Thanks Mike.

Cut After A Successful Bulk

Q: mike, after a successfull bulk thanks to your advice, I've really brought out my shoulders, from someone who had loads of fat on his arms, to a much more defined, leaner shape. However, I've still got too much fat on me in my oppinion, and I would like to begin a cut program. what would you recommend for me to do over the next few weeks? how long should i cut for before my metabolism slows down too much? Al (cro)

Labrada Shake

Q: Hello Mike,

My question is if it would be OK to drink a Labrada shake every AM before going to work, then eating something sensible such as a tuna sandwich, chicken salad, or even a cold cut sandwich for lunch. For diner, I would normaly eat whatever I was in the mood, but in a small portion.

I am 5'9' and weigh right at 205lbs. I jog 2 miles about 2-3 times a week. My goal is to loose at least 20 pounds.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance

Does Muscle Accelerate Fat Burning

Q: does muscle accelerate fat burning

A: Yes, muscle is a great fat-burner! Muscle is a metabolically active tissue which means it requires energy to sustain itself even if it's not being actively utilized. And, of course, muscles burn still more calories if you use them. And, as noted in the previous Q&A, if you use your muscles for very heavy lifting then they burn even more calories in the repair process required after such efforts. So to summarize, the more muscle you have, the easier and faster you'll burn calories and fat.

How Many Calories Are Burned Lifting Weights

Q: how many calories are burned while lifting weights

A: Heavy weightlifting session can burn roughly the same number of calories as a heavy cardio session of the same duration -- around 10 per minute. However the huge advantage of weightlifting is that it will continue to burn calories AFTER you're done lifting weights. This happens because heavy weightlifting inflicts significant physical damage to the muscles, forcing your body to repair them. That repair process can burn more calories and fat than the exercise burned in the first place!
