Left Side Weaker Than Right Side

Q: Hi Mike, I am 25, M, 5'9' at 176 lbs. I am quite satisfied with my progress. I do almost all exercises for all body parts, including squats, deadlifts, and benchpresss, and all other exercises. I am using Optimum Whey. I have used Animal Pak before in 2005, SAN muscle mass, optimum whey, Prolab whey, prolab creatine, used APN creatine but stopped two weeks ago. The main problem is that my left side of the body is a bit weaker than the right side of the body especially arms and shoulder (Left arm biceps is 1 inch short than the right one ).

Half-Motion Exercise Without Any Rest

Q: I used to lift weights for legs, calvses,stomach,shoulders,back,chest,biceps,tricepts,forearm at Balley's machines (no free weights) everyday for five days doing 12 reps per set, 6-8sets per group for about 50 minutes doing half-motion only and without any rest in between. I weighed 145lbs but I stopped for almost 3 years and I have gained 20 additional lbs and would like to get back to this exercise program to lose the addtional weight - question is, is this OK - meanig - all muscle groups everyday and half-motion instead of a full like you suggest - 1 sec positive and 2 secs negative?

A: At 6 feet, 185 pounds you're not overweightm but right on the border of it (your BMI is 25 and anything over 25 is considered overweight) so you could potentially lose a little bit of weight and fat and still be OK. Also, at 17 your 'man boobs' may still go away on their own to some degree with time.

Gravity Pulling Arms Down

Q: Just a comment on 2447. With machines you don't have any gravity pulling your arms down like you would if you were exercising your biceps with barbells.

A: Well, gravity is still there, but machines typically work your arms at angles different from freeweights, and, say, 60 pounds on one machine will certainly feel very different from 60 pounds of freeweights. So overall experience with machines will feel very different from freeweights, even if you are doing the same number of reps to failure.

How Many Meals Should A Soccer Player Eat

Q: How much and how many meals should i eat a day i am a soccer player.

A: If you are not trying to actively change your body composition (i.e. lose fat or build muscle) then just the traditional three meals per day can be good enough. The key is simply eating enough to keep your weight constant (more if you are a teenager and still growing, of course). How much food that is you probably know already -- if your weight is constant now, then your current diet is fine.

A: If you haven't lost any weight, then you didn't lose any significant amount of muscle. You probably lost some strength in any case, but that will come back as you restart workouts. If you did lose weight then you probably did lose some muscle, but as with strength rebuilding just-lost muscle is much easier than obtaining it for the first time. As you start eating normal again and get your weight back up, the muscle will come back.

Why Can't I Do More Than 12 Pushups

A: The main ingredients in those drinks are lots of sugar and caffeine or other stimulant which give you a quick hit. You can certainly run or exercise after drinking them, but they are not particularly healthy (or good for your teeth) being so rich in sugar. If possible I would recommend eating a regular meal before workout instead and maybe having a cup of coffee if you need an extra boost.

A: 30 pounds in 3 months is pretty aggressive, but doable. A: Rowing machine is a good piece of equipment and it will allow you to build up your back muscles a bit if they're languishing now, but as far as fat loss it will not be significantly better than other forms of cardio work (such as running).

Eat 300 Calories Less On Non-Training Days

Q: Mike on non training days is it ok to eat 300 calories less? I want to obtain only muscle if possible and little too no fat. Is it ok?

A: In my experience changing calories between training and non-training days did not produce better results than simply keeping them even throughout. It's much more important to make sure your average calorie level is just right to keep gaining weight but as slowly as possible. So I recommend focusing on that as the main goal and not worrying too much about changing calorie level on non-training days.

A: The most traditional and probably most relevant way to measure shoulders is to place two rulers in parallel, one against each shoulder, and measure the distance between them. If you simply use tape measure against the skin to measure shoulder-to-shoulder, the result will heavily depend on upper back and traps muscles which are bigger than deltoids and will not reflect the shoulder size well.

A: Unfortunately there is no way to know that exactly without knowing your body fat percentage. At your height, weight and age your body fat is probably around 30%. Average muscle content in a person is about 35%, so you have 5% more of your bodyweight (or 8 pounds) in muscle than fat.

A: I am not sure exactly what you mean, but your weight is perfectly normal for your height. If you are a teenager, then especially you should not be thinking of losing weight. Instead, focus on being more physically active (doesn't matter how -- sports, walking, jogging, running, biking, swimming, mowing lawns, or anything else really) and eating healthy foods -- especially whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.

A: I haven't heard of any experiments done on this, but my guess is that you'd swim faster in warmer water because the colder the water the more energy the body has to expend on just maintaining its normal temperature and bloodflow to the extremeties is weakened in colder water. In warmer water more energy should be available for the actual swimming.

A: Many or even most whey and egg protein supplements contain soy lecithin derived from soybeans, which I assume does not fit your requirement. But as far as I know casein protein supplements don't contain any lecithin, so they may be your best your best bet -- check with wherever you buy supplements. A: That looks like a solid split. Your shoulders may be pretty tired after the chest/triceps workout, so you could potentially swap chest and back days to allow a little more time in between chest and shoulders. But that is a very minor point and is in no way necessary. Your program is good.

Weight Fluctuates A Lot Every Day

A: I usually don't comment on individual supps, but given a choice between proven plain old creatine monohydrate and a hyped up new supp like NO-Xplode, I would go with creatine monohydrate. There's no evidence that nitric oxide does anything for your muscles in the long term (it does provide a quick muscle pump but that just temporarily makes you look buff) and it may actually be hazardous to your health. Stick with creatine monohydrate.

Q: hi mike, im bulking at the moment, and wondering if potatoes are a good source of carbs? it wont be an everyday carb, but maybe a couple times a week. ive heard from somewhere they ahve lots of sugar, so they are bad? is this true?

A: Potatoes are not the best carb choice. They don't contain sugar as such, but your body digests them very quickly, like sugar, so they have the same effect. However couple times a week potatoes are not going to hurt your progress. Of all potatoes, the best choice are young small red potatoes boiled with skin. Sweet potatoes are an even better choice.

I Want To Gain Weight

A: Sure! Gaining weight is not hard -- you just have to eat A LOT! If you already eat a lot but are still not gaining weight, you have to eat MORE! Anybody can gain weight if they just eat enough. Some good heathy foods that add calories easily are dry-roasted nuts, natural peanut butter and bananas.

Pain Inside Elbows

Q: Ive taken up weight lifting again after quite a long lay-off. Im experiencing pain that seems to be coming from inside my elbows. Am i starting off too heavy after lay-off? Bodyweight Exercises Consecutive Days

Q: Can I do bodyweight exercises for two consecutive days or more or do muscles need a one day break? Is it harder to gain muscle if they dont get a day's rest?

A: Most bodyweight exercises are 'light' enough that you can do them daily while still benefitting from muscle growth and strength increases. One possible exception to this is pullups, which is relatively high intensity even if one is in good shape.

6 Foot, 200 Pounds, BMI

Q: I was reading questions 82 to 84. What I found interesting is that you did not consider then guy who was 6 foot and 200 pound to be either very muscular or very chubby(fat) for his height. I know that you are not a fan of bmi as it does not take account of muscle weight and body fat percentage. At 6 foot, bmi would put a 165 pounds(roughly) as a middle figure with a spread of 14 pounds or so above or below 165 pounds ? this spread would be a healthy weight. 200 pounds would end up well into the overweight category for a 6 foot male.
