Lose 15 Kgs In Five Months

Q: Hi Mike! I'm turning 20 this November. I weight 77kgs. Female. 5"1' in height. I know I am obese. Is it possible that I can lose 15kgs in just less than five months? If yes, what are the things that I should do? Should I go to gym or simply put 1hour of my everyday life in treadmill? Thank you.

A: Yes, it's definitely possible to lose 15kgs in 5 months. The main thing you'll need to do is clean up your diet. That means not only eating less than you are probably used to, but more importantly eating healthy foods instead of processed junk. Please read my Nutrition article to learn how to eat well and then put together a diet for yourself of between 1200 and 1500 calories daily following the guidelines outlined in that article. There're some sample diet plans there to get you started as well.

As far as exercise you should do both heavy (heavy for you, not for somebody else) resistance training and cardio such as treadmill. Resistance training and cardio stimulate burning fat in different ways and you should do both. Cardio works by burning calories during the exercise itself. Heavy whole-body resistance training works by not only burning calories during the exercise itself but also by raising your overall metabolism since your body has to repair physical muscle damage that comes from the gym (steady pace cardio doesn't have the same effect, though sprinting does). And both cardio and resistance training are great for your overall health, of course, even aside from helping you slim down. Please read my Weight Training article on how to put together a training program for yourself (you'll find sample programs there as well). Remember that the focus of weight training should be to exercise your whole body, with biggest muscle groups being legs and back. Don't just do shoulder presses and bicep curls -- focus on big exercises like squats, lunges, deadlifts, rows, and pulldowns. Good luck!
