Low Or High GI Carbs

Q: mike, if your bulking. and eating aroudn 6-7 meals daily. should u be eating low or high GI carb sources? usually ill have wheat bread, brown rice, rolled oats, and potatoes for my carbs for meals..

A: Always always always eat low-GI foods! On a bulk you just eat a lot, but you still eat low-GI as much as you can.

The only time you may potentially consider eating high-GI is in your post-workout shake: bodybuilders often drink dextrose (very high GI) with whey protein right after the workout. The idea is to give your muscles easy fast energy to start the recovery. Personally, I don't think that this practice is all that great -- a nice big regular meal rich in protein and low- or medium-GI foods would do just as good right after the workout and it would let you avoid the sudden insulin spike and rotting teeth that come with high-GI shakes.

So my advice is to stick with low-GI as much as possible.
